Better than MDR-NC6

Pros: Fairly good sound, smaller profile, great price point, comfortable, foldable, stylish
Cons: Non-detachable mini-plug, soft pouch (no hard case)
There are better noise cancelling headphones out there, but not for less than $50. At $49.99, these are great headphones for the traveler on a budget. I previously bought the MDR-NC6s and they worked pretty well for me. I originally got them to use while flying, but I also use them at work to remove the annoying hum from our company computers. The NC7 is a great upgrade from the older model. They noticeably cancel more of the ambient noise than the NC6. Also, there is virtually no lag time between when the noise cancelling is switched on and when it actually kicks in. The NC6 took a few seconds to begin actually cancelling ambient noise. Also, a common complaint that I've had (and read about) with the NC6 is that there's a faint, yet audible hiss while the noise cancelling is on. This has been greatly reduced to a hardly noticeable, faint background static with the NC7, which will probably annoy the audiophile, but doesn't bother me. These headphones are much more comfortable than the previous model. I must note that these headphones don't cancel out all of the noise, just the constant background noise, like the engines of an airplane or the hum of loud equipment. You can still hear people talking or the keyboard while you're typing (faintly), but they're not meant to drown out these noises, so keep that in mind when trying out headphones.
These are far from the perfect headphones, however. The mini plug is not detachable as with other, more expensive models. Also, they use a double cable design (one leading into each ear pad) as opposed the single line design of its predecessor. This might cause the headphone cable to get more tangled. Also, the case that it comes with is just a soft nylon drawstring pouch, as opposed the molded cases of more expensive headphones.
Bottom line, with only minor flaws, these are great headphones for an unbeatable price. I only wish they came in a wireless behind-the-neck "street style" version. |
Great for the price

These are my first noise canceling headphones & I'm pretty happy with them. I used them twice on an airplane & found them perfect. The fit on the ears isolates the external sound by more than 50% & when you use the noise canceling feature, it helps further. When working in office or home, you don't have to use the noise canceling feature at all.
These do well when traveling by road in a car or van, especially for the kids, if they are watching a movie or just listening to music.

For the price, these are amazing headphones. I had been using the headphones that come standard with Apple's Ipod. The sound was good, but I wanted something with more punch that would cancel out noise. After expressing my disappointment with the Ipod headphones, I got these as a gift.
Once I got them, I took them out of the box, and immediately hooked them into my Ipod. I was impressed with the clarity, but the bass wasn't that great. I then put the AAA battery in the slot and turned on the noise-canceling function and WHOA! The bass really kicked in and the sound was boosted up.
I recommend these headphones to people on a budget who still want good sound. They have made listening to music more enjoyable. These headphones have great clarity, good bass, and they are comfortable to wear.
Five stars for price and sound quality. |
Can't tell the difference between these and Bose

I do a lot of flying but have never had noise canceling headphones. Before a recent trip (15 hours from Chicago to Shanghai) I decided to buy these. I was very pleased with these headphones. When listening to music or a movie, it eliminated most of the background engine noise on the airplane. When I wanted to sleep I wore the headphones with the canceling turned on with no music. It was much quieter. Fabulous product.
By the way, on my return flight a guy next to me let me use his Bose noise canceling headphones for a few minutes to "hear" the difference. I could not tell a difference between his $300 headphones and my $30 headphones.
One other tip, make sure you travel with extra batteries. In foreign airports you will not be able to buy batteries. I guess they are deemed a security risk. |
Amazing!

| I love these headphones! They reduce noise by a whole lot, and are quite comfortable. I had some philips 'noise canceling' ones, but they didn't work so well, so I didn't have much hope for these. I tried them on, though, and was pleasantly surprised. I would reccomend these to anyone looking for affordable, comfy, and very much noise reducing headphones. |
